Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis: Supporting More Patients to Dialyse at Home

A practical clinician-led guide designed to support healthcare professionals implementing Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis (Assisted PD) within their hospital

The rising dialysis demand: why Assisted PD is critical

  • Understanding Assisted PD: PD delivered with support from trained helpers. In this guidebook, Assisted PD means paid support provided by staff (not informal family support).
  • The importance of Assisted PD:
    • Protects patient access to home dialysis
    • Supports equitable access to dialysis care across populations
    • Helps reduce pressure on in-centre HD capacity

A closer look at the Assisted PD Guidebook:

  • Ready-to-use templates
  • Workforce planning
  • Clear referral and escalation pathways
  • Robust governance structures
  • A structured approach to evaluation and continuous improvement

Receiving Assisted PD has been a great help and has had numerous psychological and physical benefits. Having the assistance of a nurse reduces that stress, as the daily burden of properly setting up the APD cycler has been lifted. I have less anxiety around undertaking PD, and my overall well-being has improved. This has tremendously improved my daily life functioning. I hope my story will assist service providers when making decisions about which future services to offer patients receiving dialysis.
